The First Goal

Yokasta scored the first goal in Highbridge Green girl’s program history and reflected on the experience.

I never knew I could do something that no girl has ever done at the Highbridge Green School. I was motivated and I had faith in myself to be the first girl in my school to score a goal in a lacrosse game. I was proud for what I did. My heart was beating like when somebody is full of fear. I was hearing one of the girls saying “I got your back go, go.” I ran as if my life depended on it, even though the opposite team tried to get the ball like a dog trying to get a bone. When I scored the goal tears came out, not of sadness but of joy and happiness inside of me. I was thinking about how I showed so much grit and enthusiasm from my first game until now.

After the goal, I finally felt confident like a real lacrosse player. I can’t help but smile all the time for what I did. I couldn't imagine not being in this school, and I'm so glad that I came here because without this school, I wouldn't even know the sport of lacrosse. I couldn't have done it without my teammates because even though we lost the game we still showed grit and worked together as a team. This is why I wouldn’t change my team for anything, because we have great sportsmanship. Lacrosse really helped my team with social skills that some of us didn’t even know we had. Some might just think that Highbridge is not a good environment for playing lacrosse, but it’s not what it looks like. In my point of view, lacrosse lets us know how to be independent and it brings happiness to us no matter what.
